Happy Bodhi Day

December 8, 2009

December 8th is the day many Buddhists schools of thought celebrate Siddhartha Gautama – Shakyamuni Buddha’s Enlightenment.

It is believed he attained enlightenment on the full-moon night in May sometime around the year 535BC, while sitting under a bodhi tree. How December 8th came to be the celebration day is a mystery to me –as are many things surrounding Buddhist culture. My best guess it that someone wanted to find a way to squeeze Buddhist culture into the “traditional” holiday season. Giving it a front row seat along with Christmas, Chanukah, and Winter Solstice.

I sent Happy Bodhi Day email greetings this morning at midnight to a few of my *CSI Buddhist friends. (*CSI = Cult? Sure is!)

I wonder how they will respond.
Here’s what I suspect:
1 of them will send me a one-word reply to my email that says, “Thanks.”
Another one will ignore the email, possibly not even opening it because the subject line reads, Happy Bodhi Day. Bodhi Day is not recognized in the *CSI Buddhist organization.

A third person will reply back asking me, “Where did you find out about this Bodhi Day? – You know there is a lot of stuff out there on the Internet and none of it is true!”

Speaking of that…
And another one will reply with something cut and pasted from the *CSI website about how Nichiren is the true Buddha.

Oh good grief, Charlie Brown!
Can’t we all just get along…island ice tea string some colored lights on our ficus trees and celebrate the joy of the season? Isn’t this the time of year dedicated to good will and PEACE?

Light a candle.
Face the East.
Have some rice and milk.
The path to peace begins with you.

    Dear RougeBuddha:
Dear RougeBuddha [what kind of name is that anyway]:

Wrong wrong! Don’t get your panties in a bunch but wrong. President Ikeda, in Volume 342 of the Human Revolution, teaches that Nichiren Daishonin was Shakyamuni Buddha’s teacher. When Nichiren wrote, “Nichiren, Disciple of Shakyamuni Buddha, he meant Shakyamuni Buddha, Disciple of Nichiren. Toda said so. Toda also said in his lecture on the Sutra that Bodhi Day is May 3rd, the day he was inaugurated as the second president of the Soka Gakkai. You should study more and stop slandering the SGI, if you know what’s good for you.

    3 Things Craig:

1st – I’m not wearing panties (so there’s nothing getting “in a bunch”, as you say)!

2nd – Who said anything about the SGI?

3rd – Do I hear a personal threat in your closing sentence???
    (Attorneys standing by…)

      Dear rougebuddha

      1st – I’m not wearing panties!

REALLY? That still doesn’t excuse you.

2nd – Who said anything about the SGI?

Everybody’s always picking on us. I just assumed.

3rd – Do I hear a personal threat in your closing sentence???
      (Attorneys standing by…)

Now that I know the truth, would you go with me to a meeting? Then we can go to dinner and a show and after, I will show you my portraits [of Ikeda]
